Individual Notes

Note for:   Henry Rice,   ABT 1718 - 13 NOV 1800         Index

Will:
     Date:   13 MAR 1798
Place:   Proved 9 March 1801 at Warwick, RI

Individual Note:   According to Cherry Fletcher Bamberg in her article "Major Henry Rice of Warwick and his Family," in Rhode Island Roots Vol. XXIV, p. 1, "He was related many times over to most of the old families in town: the Arnolds, Holdens, Greenes, Staffords, and Gortons. On his father's side alone at least eighty-four cousins had been born in Kent County."

This article includes much information about Henry's public service and his family.

Note for:   Hannah Nichols,   BET 1731 AND 1735 -          Index

Individual Note:   I have roughly estimated her possible years of birth based on the date of marriage.

Individual Notes

Note for:   Ebenezer Hill,   BET 1725 AND 1735 -          Index

Individual Note:   I have roughly estimated his birth year based on the date of marriage.

Individual Notes

Note for:   Ebenezer Smith,   ABT 1715 -          Index

Occupation:
     Place:   Cordwinder

Individual Note:   Jeffrey Watson's Diary has this interesting note, which may (?) pertain to this Ebenezer and his brother: "Ebenezer & Ephraim Smith tried to cheat me by altering the date of their deed" (entry dated 9 Mar 1740/1).

Ebenezer may have had a second wife named Elizabeth, although I am not sure of this. I have found some references to Ebenbezer & Elizabeth from this general time period. (needs more research)

Note for:   John Remington,   BET 1722 AND 1727 - 6 DEC 1809         Index

Individual Note:   (If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)

I am making an assumption that this John Remington belongs in this family group, solely based on the names and dates of his children. (But note: this needs further research. At the present time I can not see any other family in which he would fit.)

Some of John's descendants -- as far as can be determined -- are buried in the Blackstone Cemetery, Blackstone, MA. A stone there refers to John Remington 1680 - 1745. But if this John who married Mary is the son of John b1680, why do the names of his children reflect the ancestry of Gershom & Clemence?

BSR says he moved from Jamestown in 1756. If so, then Tiddeman may not be his son -- but whose? The names of Tiddeman's children indicate he may belong to this family group. (see notes for Tiddeman Remington)

This note may pertain to this John Remington: Newport Mercury 30 Oct 1915, historical note from 31 Jul 1769 - "John Remington carries on shoe making for Elizabeth Mumford, wido, in New Lane."

Individual Notes

Note for:   Mary Unknown,   ABT 1725 -          Index

Individual Note:   (If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)

I think it likely that she was Mary Hull, daughter of Tiddeman Hull b.1682. (This needs more research to confirm.)

Individual Notes

Note for:   Jonathan Remington,   10 JUL 1749 - 1787         Index

Occupation:
     Place:   Mariner

Will:
     Date:   16 JAN 1786
Place:   Proved 6 Aug 1787 at Newport, RI

Individual Note:   The birth record at Jamestown identifies him as son of John & Mary Remington.

I am not positive that his marriage and data belongs to this Jonathan, but I am making an assumption, subject to further research. The will abstract is in the RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 7, No. 1. It identifies him as a mariner of Newport, and mentions his wife by name. No other family members are mentioned.

Individual Notes

Note for:   Dinah Remington,   10 MAY 1751 -          Index

Individual Note:   The birth record at Jamestown identifies her as daughter of John & Mary Remington.

BSR says that on 22 Sept 1777, Dinah was granted permission by the Council of War to proceed in a flag of truce to the island of Jamestown, under direction of Col. Dyer.

Individual Notes

Note for:   Catherine Remington,   18 MAY 1754 -          Index

Individual Note:   The birth record at Jamestown identifies her as daughter of John & Mary Remington.

I am not positive that this is the Catharine/Catherine Remington who married Elisha Tew, but based on approximate age and location it seems a reasonable assumption.

See "The History of the Descendants of Elder John Strong," Volume 2, by Benjamin Woodbridge Dwight, p. 1397 (Google Books).

Individual Notes

Note for:   Dinah Smith,   4 JUL 1771 - 15 FEB 1860         Index

Individual Note:   According to a family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect (source Kenneth Linwood Shaw, III), Dinah Smith married three times, to: a Mr. Solomon, by whom she had a daughter Sarah b1795; Anthony Shaw IV (as his third wife) by whom she had eleven children born in New York State between the years 1798 and 1815; and Uriah Goodrich whom she married in 1832.

According to notes at this site, Dinah's second husband was the same Anthony Shaw who had married her aunt Susannah Remington. This has been confirmed in an email from Sherry Kosciuch.

Anthony Shaw's will mentions "his wife's daughter Sarah Solomon"; there is no indication as to whether this is her maiden name or her married name.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Dinah Goodridge, age 80 RI, is living at Alfred, Allegany Co., NY. She is with the Wescott family. There are several Shaw families nearby.

Individual Notes

Note for:   Phebe Remington,   ABT 1720 -          Index

Individual Note:   (If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)
Although I have not found a birth record for Phebe, the marriage record at Jamestown identifies the bride as Phebe Remington, of Gershom & Clemence, of Jamestown.

Individual Notes

Note for:   William Battey,    -          Index

Individual Note:   The marriage record at Jamestown identifies him as William Battey, Jr., of William & Jean.
